Synopsis.
This is the story of Sister Bakhita, a young girl from Sudan, Who was made Saint by Pope John Paul II. Kidnapped as a young girl by slave dealers she spent her early in the cruel hands of a Turkish General. Frederico Martin, a widower and traveler from Veneto, saw her plight and rescued her. He found a home for her looking after his young daughter Alina in the small town where he lived. It was not an easy existence with the poverty and prejudices of the people there, but Bakhita is kind and generous in her help and gradually comes closer to God helped by father Antonio the local priest. In spite of the antagonism of some of the people in the town she is determined to become a nun and Father Antonio helps her enter a convent. Martin however wants her to return to Africa with him; he almost considers her his property and even Alina is jealous and afraid of losing Bakhita. Martin insists that the church returns Bakhita to his care. Finally he has accept that he cannot treat her like a slave, the fate from which he had originally rescued her in the past, and Bakhita is free to follow her chosen path.
